(ATR) Seven airlines are in discussion to become sponsors of the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics, Around the Rings has learned, and the alcoholic beverages category deal has been finalized.
A spokesperson for the Rio 2016 organizing committee said American Airlines, Delta, Gol, KLM, Lufthansa + Swiss Air, and United were the airlines in discussion to join the 2016 sponsorship program.
Both Gol and TAM are Brazil-based airlines, KLM is Dutch, Lufthansa is German, and American, Delta, and United are U.S. carriers.
However, a spokesperson for Rio 2016 could only confirm that the tender process for the category was launched. Conversations between the airlines and Rio 2016 began during the Association of Brazilian Travel Agencies convention in Sao Paulo earlier this month.
"We are now in talks with a number of potential partners in this category and there is no specific deadline dateby which a partner will be announced," he added.
British Airlines, the airlines sponsor for London 2012, is believed to have paid more than $60 million for the rights.
The spokesperson also said a deal for alcoholic beverages has been finalized. The source could not say which company has secured the deal. The announcement will be made when the company feels the timing is "best for them," the source said.
The confectionary category is the remaining open tender for Rio 2016 sponsors.
Rio 2016 lists five firms in its tier one sponsorship category, and four in the second tier. The airlines category is typically a tier one sponsor.
