Manchester City FC will team with the New York Yankees to bring a 20th franchise to Major League Soccer.
New York City Football Club are expected to begin play in 2015 at an "interim home" until construction of a new stadium, likely at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, can be completed.
"We proudly welcome two of the most prestigious professional global sports organizations to Major League Soccer," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said Wednesday in a statement announcing the partnership.
"The New York area is home to more than 19 million people, and we look forward to an intense cross-town rivalry between New York City Football Club and the New York Red Bulls that will captivate this great city."
Under the terms of their agreement, Man City will be majority owner of the club with the Yankees an active member of the ownership group.
MLS is yet to reveal the franchise fee paid for its long-awaited rival to the Red Bulls, but reports are estimating the amount at $100 million.
"In the Yankees, we have found the absolute best partner for developing a world-class sports organization and a winning team that will carry the New York City Football Club name with pride," said Blues CEO Ferran Soriano.
