New IOC Sponsors Soon?
The IOC is close to sealing TOP sponsorship deals with Dow Chemical and Procter & Gamble, according to Stephen Wilson of the AP.
An unnamed Olympic official says that the IOC hopes to close the sponsorship deals within a month, according to the report.
P&G is currently a sponsor of the USOC and launched an aggressive marketing campaign for the Vancouver Olympics. That deal lasts through the 2012 Olympics in London.
Reports last month said that P&G had "spoken to ad agencies about creating a major campaign promoting its sponsorship," which would start at the London Olympics.
Dow Chemical, a chemical and manufacturing company, is also based in the U.S.
There are currently nine TOP sponsors. The new sponsorships each could last at least four years and be worth nearly $100 million.
World Cup Sponsors Deemed "Unhealthy"; McDonald's Responds
World Cup sponsors have been labeled as "unhealthy" just days before the tournament is set to begin in South Africa.
The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has criticized FIFA’s World Cup sponsors, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Budweiser and told the BBC that the choices of sponsors were "disappointing."
"The FIFA website describes sponsorship as an opportunity to promote brands on a global basis and we would argue that it is a real own goal to be giving this opportunity to companies that are known for unhealthy products," Teresa Nightingale, general manager of WCRF, said.
McDonald's responded late Friday.
"The characterization of our food is simply inaccurate. We’re highly confident in the quality and variety of our food, based on our long-time commitment to food safety and quality. In fact, at every step, we work with safety experts and scientists to get it right for our customers," McDonald's said in a statement.
"Also, McDonald’s has a legacy of giving back to the host country, and in South Africa, we’re helping to establish long-term youth sports programs throughout South African communities. Our sponsorship of World Cup complements decades-long programs in markets around the world that makes fitness and physical activity possible for children."
The criticism comes just days after the sponsors have ramped up their World Cup advertisements ahead of the tournament in South Africa.
BMW Sponsoring USOC
BMW is reported to be on the verge of announcing a sponsorship of the U.S. Olympic Committee.
SportsBusiness Journal first reported the deal on Monday, said to be worth $24 million through the Rio 2016 Olympics. The deal is valued in cash, not value-in-kind.
AroundtheRings understands that an official announcement still may be a few weeks away.
The sponsorship is the first dealstruck for the automotive category since GM ended its USOC sponsorship in 2008.
The German car manufacturer is the first non-U.S. car manufacturer to sponsor the USOC, although it was a sponsor for the Atlanta Olympics.
BMW is the official automotive partner for the London 2012 Games. BMW will supply 4,000 vehicles for officials and competitors to use during the Games.
In addition, BMW is sponsoring the Munich bid for the 2018 Winter Games.
Munich Signs "Green" Sponsor
BayWa AG, an energy and construction group, will serve as the newest national sponsor for the Munich 2018 Olympicbid.
Munich 2018 announced the deal on Monday.
"With BayWa on board, we are even more confident that by 2018, Munich can deliver its ambitious targets: state-of-the-art life-cycle source reduction, lasting reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, innovative water-management and waste avoidance practices will all contribute to our sustainability goals" said Bavarian prime minister Horst Seehofer in a statement.
BayWa will help ensure Munich 2018 is eco-friendly. BayWa becomes the bid’s sixth national sponsor, and 10th sponsor in total.
