Munich 2018 signs German bank group, Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, as its latest sponsor in a multimillion dollar deal.
The bank joins BMW, Munich Airport and Munich Fair among the bigger sponsors of the German Olympic bid. Adidas and Siemens are expected to be the next to partner as Munich looks to raise nearly $40 million to fund its bid activities in the run-up to the 2011 vote on the 2018 Olympic host city.
Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe’s involvement increases the bank’s existing commitment as a national Olympic partner.
IOC vice president Thomas Bach, who is also president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, said: “Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe not only promotes the German sports badge across popular sports and the German Olympic team, but also supports many up-and-coming-athletes at elite sports schools.
“Amongst these athletes are potential participants of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Therefore the bank’s decision to help Munich secure the Winter Games in 2018 is a logical progression and lifts their existing commitment to a new level.”
Richard Adam, Munich 2018’s joint managing director, added: “The opportunities of Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe to reach people through their dense network of branches nationwide, make them an extremely valuable partner over and above the pure financial aspects of this deal.”
Munich is attempting to become the only summer and winter Olympic host city, following its staging of the 1972 Games.
PyeongChang, South Korea and Annecy in France, will provide the main competition in the race for 2018, which concludes with the IOC vote in July 2011.
Youth Olympics Telcom Sponsor
Singapore Telecommunications Ltd will provide the range of telecom services needed for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games as a tier-one sponsor.
SingTel will provide fixed and mobile telecommunication services, internet and leased lines services as well as software for website and mobile application services.
“This is yet another superb opportunity for Singapore and SingTel to showcase our brands and capabilities in the international sporting arena. For SingTel, our support is also well aligned with our efforts to reach out to the youth segment of our customer base,” said SingTel Group CEO Chua Sock Koong.
Singapore 2010 chairman and IOC member Ser Miang Ng noted the importance of the sponsorship for the Youth Olympic Games.
“The primary audience of Singapore 2010 is youth, and as we all know, the young people of today cannot survive without their mobile phones and the internet. Singapore 2010 thus leverages heavily on the New Media to reach out to youths here and around the world,” Ng said at the Friday launch of the SingTel sponsorship.
