IOC Ethics Inquiry for Korean Sponsorships

The IOCconfirms an inquiry is underway for a possible conflict of interest fortwo Korean companies with the PyeongChang Winter Olympic bid – whichsays it is following all the rules of the IOC.

At issue is asponsorship of the International Skating Union by Korean Airlines, aswell as a sponsorship announced this week from Samsung for theinternational rowing federation, FISA.

IOC spokeswoman EmmanuelleMoreau tells Around the Rings "the IOC is aware of potential conflictsof interests and as per IOC procedure, the Ethics Commission is lookinginto it."

FISA President and IOC member Denis Oswald tells Aroundthe Rings he sees "no problem" with Samsung’s sponsorship of thefederation.

"Samsung is a partner of the Olympic Movement theyare in the TOP Program and they express a wish already to extend it toour federation" he said.

"We had a long negotiation and we didn’tsee any problem because they are part of the Olympic Movement. Thissponsorship has not been suspended because of the PyeongChangcandidature and we are a summer sport. We are totally out of thecandidature. I don’t see any problem for a summer federation to doanything," says Oswald.

Oswald, who has a vote in the election of a 2018 host next July, says the Samsung deal will not influence his decision.

ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta, also an IOC member, was not immediately available for comment.

If the Ethics Commission finds proof of a rules breach, it may issue a warning, which would be made public.
