LOCOG "Satisfied" with Dow
LOCOG is standing behind Dow Chemical’s Olympic sponsorship.
Human rights organizations and some Indian athletes have called for an end to the partnership over an industrial disaster in 1984.
A facility owned and operated by Union Carbide India Limited spewed toxins into the Indian town of Bhopal, killing thousands. In 2001, Dow Chemical bought Union Carbide, which owned the majority of the stocks of the responsible company at the time of the incident.
The Associated Press reports that LOCOG accepts that Dow Chemical is not responsible for the tragedy.
"We are satisfied that Dow was not in ownership, operation or involved in the site at the time (of the disaster) or at the time the full and final settlement was made," said LOCOG chairman Sebastian Coe.
Dow Chemical says it purchased stake in Union Carbide after the company sold its entire stake in Union Carbide India Limited.
"There are some who continue to try to affix responsibility for the Bhopal tragedy to Dow, but the fact is that Dow never owned, operated, nor inherited the facility in Bhopal, and efforts to attach Dow are misdirected," said a Dow spokesperson in an email to Around the Rings.

Kellogg Sponsors USA Gymnastics
Kellogg Company is sponsoring the national governing body USA Gymnastics.
As part of this three-year partnership, Kellogg will support a national tour that will take U.S. athletes to 40 cities after the London Olympics.
"One of the most important elements to a successful tour are the corporate partners," USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny tells Around the Rings.
"We are confident that a partner like Kellogg’s will help us elevate the level of promotion and exposure for this post-Olympic undertaking. They truly understand consumer marketing at the highest level."
The cereal manufacturer will also be the title sponsor for the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships in Everett, Wash. from March 16 to 18.
