Capital One Major Curling Sponsor
As the 2010 Men’s World Curling Championship concludes and The Grey Power Players’ Championship is set to begin April 13, it becomes clear what the two have in common besides curling: Capital One.
The bank has become a common name when mentioning a curling event. It sponsors the Grand Slam of Curling, which includes a series of curling events throughout the season.
"Curling is a very popular sport here, so when we were looking for sports’ sponsorships, we wanted to align ourselves with a sport that really held onto those Canadian values, so curling was just a natural fit," Laurel Ostfield, Capital One Canada Spokeswoman told ATR.
Capital One Canada was a presenting sponsor for the 2009 Women’s Curling Championship and is now the title sponsor for the Men’s and Women’s World Curling Championships.
Capital One Canada also is an official partner of the World Curling Federation. Through the partnership, Ostfield says it gives the bank the opportunity to work closely with curlers on developing the curling program and getting fans involved.
The bank wants to make curling events more fun for the audience, Ostfield said. It has a new contest that allows fans to compete for $1 million at curling events.
Capital One works closely with Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to improve the activation at curling events and get communities involved. It has implemented a program that takes curling into inner-city schools and the School of Rock program which allows children to participate on the ice with the professional athletes.
"Curling is sort of a quintessential Canadian sport, so for us, it’s a great way for us to reach out to Canadians across the country," Ostfield said.
"It really connects us with one of the country’s most popular, most distinct sports."
Other events in the Grand Slam of Curling include the BDO Canadian Open, The National and the 32nd Annual Trail Appliances Curling Classic.
