Anheuser-Busch Cuts Olympic Ad Spending

A-B has told rights-holder NBC that its ad spend for Vancouver and Londonwill be only about half what it was in Beijing, according to the Wall Street Journal.

One estimate indicates A-B spent more than $53 million on TV ads for the2008 Summer Games. Another report said A-B spent more than $277 million in sports advertising last year, beating all other sports advertisers.

The brewer historically has been the biggest corporate sponsor in the U.S. Its deal with the USOC goes through 2012; it was the international beer sponsor last year.

The company also apparently will not continue its role as the exclusive beeradvertiser on NBC's coverage of the Games. That opens the door for rivalssuch as MillerCoors to buy ad time during the Games.
