(ATR) On Monday, the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation announced plans to build a new large-scale solar array at the Utah Olympic Oval.
The Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation says the project showcases a "creative and fiscally sound" way to reduce costs at this active Olympic venue while saving "approximately $100,000" per year in energy costs.
The solar project is predicted to "pay for itself in less than five years through the support of community grants and tax credits," according to the foundation.
"The Olympic Oval's solar energy project represents the first of many sustainability efforts on behalf of the foundation," president and CEO of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation Colin Hilton said in a statement.
Hilton said the foundation is "committed to researching and leveraging new technologies and sustainability practices."
The foundation, Hilton explained, recognizes the "importance of such efforts to the Olympic movement and any future Olympic bid efforts."
In 2002, the Utah Olympic Oval hosted speedskating events for the Salt Lake City Games. Today, the U.S. speedskating team is headquartered at the oval.
