10 May 2011, Geneva, Switzerland – The second edition of the International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development opened at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Geneva. Strong focus was placed on how sport is contributing to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) - a global action plan to achieve the eight anti-poverty goals by their 2015 target date and the announcement of major new commitments for women's and children's health and other initiatives against poverty, hunger and disease.

A special panel discussion was devoted to how sport can help build a legacy, that saw Dmitry Chernyshenko, Sochi 2014 President and CEO; Carlos Nuzman, President, RIO 2016 Olympic Games Organizing Committee; Gert Oosthuizen Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation, South Africa; Lamine Diack, President, International Athletics Federation (IAAF); and Phillip Craven, President of International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Dmitry Chernyshenko, Sochi 2014 President and CEO, proposed to the organizers to consider the next Winter Olympic capital of Sochi as a host city to the Forum in 2013:

"The International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development coming to Sochi in 2013 would be an extremely proud moment for the city. Following on from hosting the Peace and Sport International Forum later this year, it would be a further sign of Sochi 2014’s commitment to play a key role in the efforts made by the Olympic Movement to spread peace across the world."

Co-organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Office of the Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on Sport for Development and Peace, the International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development is part of the IOC’s efforts to act as a catalyst for collaboration with the ultimate objective of making the world a better and more peaceful place through sport.
