The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee and the Autonomous Non-commercial Organization "Transport Directorate of the Olympic Games" presented the Games transport plan, developed in accordance with recommendations from the International Olympic Committee. The transport scheme was carefully planned taking into account residents and visitors to the city of Sochi. The Sochi 2014 Games will be one of the most compact in the history of Olympic Winter Games. All competition venues in the Olympic Park are located within walking distance of each other, and the venues located in the Mountain Cluster in Krasnaya Polyana are 48 kilometers from the Coastal Cluster.

The plan provides movement on transport around the city and between venues for spectators, journalists, athletes and members of the Olympic Family, as well as Sochi residents during Games time.

Transport during the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be coordinated by the Logistics Transport Center (LTC) management system, located in the city of Sochi (123 Plastunskaya St.). The LTC has taken into consideration the increase in demand during Games time and has made the necessary preparations to ensure a reliable and quality service throughout.

New roads and crossings have been built especially for the Games and 7 vehicle fleets have been put into service.

Spectator Transport System

During the Games, spectators will have access to the comfortable Olympic public transport system. Travel in and around Olympic venues by personal vehicle will be limited. The mountains can be reached by road or by rail. A system of bus routes and cable ways provides transportation between the hubs of the Mountain Cluster and the venues.

A ticket for the competitions gives the right to free transportation on Olympic public transport on the day of the event.

Lastochka trains will run along the new Adler - Krasnaya Polyana railway every 20-40 minutes.

Five routes for electric trains have been determined for transport service: Sochi - Adler - Olympic Park, Sochi - Adler - Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi - Adler - Airport, Adler - Krasnaya Polyana, Olympic Park - Krasnaya Polyana.

It will take 46 minutes to go from the center of Sochi to the Olympic Park by railway, and the trains will run every 8-15 minutes. Each train will transfer over 2,000 passengers.

Transport for the Olympic Family and athletes

Olympic buses will transport members of the Olympic Family and athletes from Sochi International Airport to the Mountain and Coastal Clusters for training, competitions, and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Bus routes will deliver passengers to venues in the Coastal and Mountain Clusters in accordance with the competition and training schedule for athletes and team officials. A 24-hour service will operate between the three Olympic villages, as well as internal shuttles within the villages. More than 50 buses will run between the venues.

Special Olympic lanes on Sochi roadways will be available for Olympic transport so that travel will not be hindered for members of the Olympic Family and athletes during Games Time. Travel by other vehicles in them will be prohibited, except for emergency vehicles and operations units.

Transport for the media

In accordance with the requirements of the International Olympic Committee, all accredited media representatives are forming a separate client group, composed of journalists and representatives of broadcasting companies and the Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS).

ANO "Transport Directorate of the Olympic Games", under the supervision of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, has developed a "Transport for Media" (TM) system. This transport system has been planned in accordance with the requirements of the International Olympic Committee, the needs of the media and the sports events schedule.

During the Games period, the main transport hubs for accredited media will be the Main Media Center in the Coastal Cluster and the Gorki Media Center in the Mountain Cluster. The Transport for Media system will include 17 routes.

The TM system provides for six routes in the Coastal Cluster. From the Main Media Center, along the ring route, one can access the competition and non-competition venues of the Olympic Park, such as the Ice Cube Curling Center, Bolshoy Ice Dome, Shayba Arena, Fisht Olympic Stadium, Iceberg Skating Palace and Adler Arena Skating Center. Also, during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, a specific route will provide a transport link between the Olympic Stadium and the Main Media Center.

Three routes will bring media representatives from their official accommodations in the Coastal Cluster to the Main Media Center. Journalists will be able to move between the airport and the Main Media Center, as well as between all official media hotels in the Coastal Cluster along two routes. From the airport, one can also access Gorki Media Center and the official media accommodations in the Mountain Cluster.

There will be a separate route between the Mountain and Coastal Clusters: Main Media Center - Gorki Media Center.

The Gorki Media Center will be the main transport hub of the Mountain Cluster, allowing travel to any of the competition venues in the mountains: RusSki Gorki Ski Jumping Center, Sanki Sliding Center, Rosa Khutor Extreme Park and Rosa Khutor Alpine Center. To get to Laura Cross-country Ski & Biathlon Center, media representatives will be able to use the transport hub at Laura from Gorki Media Center by TM system buses and then use the cable car.

In addition to the dedicated TM transport system, accredited members of the media may use the transport system for spectators and accredited Games clients.

Separate buses for representatives of International Sports Federations and the Games workforce will run on the Olympic routes from 5:30 am to 1:00 am.

Municipal transport system during the Games Period

As part of the Games preparations, the Sochi Administration has been working to optimize the public transport route network.

New transport facilities have gone into operation, and the over 460 new, larger buses have gone into operation, significantly reducing the number of routes from 199 in 2010 to 109 in 2013, decreasing the burden on the city's roads. During the Games 109 routes will be in operation and approximately 786 buses will be in operation each day.

The optimized route network provides for the uninterrupted service of large capacity buses on several main routes and the delivery of passengers to transfer hubs in order to establish joint transportation with rail. This will enable the removal of a transport load from the road network, and with the regular operation of electric trains, a decrease in the burden on public transport during peak hours and the creation of comfortable travel conditions.

During the Olympic and Paralympic Games, public transport will operate from 5:00 am to 2:00 am in Sochi. Buses will run every five minutes on major routes in peak hours.

"Olympic lanes"

On the roads of Sochi so called "Olympic lanes" will be introduced only during Games Time. The use of Olympic lanes is generally accepted as international practice, as these lanes have been used in all recent Olympic Games. The main objective of the introduction of Olympic lanes is to ensure a fixed travel time for participants and organizers at the Olympic and Paralympic Games – athletes, Olympic family members, media representatives and Sochi 2014 personnel.

Only vehicles with entry and parking permits for the territory of the Olympic venues can travel in them. The appropriate permits are issued only by the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee and only for vehicles that are involved in provision for the Games. These can be defined as "Olympic vehicles". For example, this includes all buses that will carry Games client groups - athletes, judges, and accredited media representatives.

The temporary traffic management scheme in Sochi will be introduced for the period from January 7 to March 21, 2014.
