"Sochi 2014" Olympic Stamps Will Be Available on Subscription

3 October 2011, Sochi, Russia. On 27 September and 3 October respectively a stamp cancellation ceremony of a new stamp series took place – these were the "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Tourism on the Black Sea Coast of Russia" and the "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Olympic Winter Sports" series.

The "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Tourism on the Black Sea Coast of Russia" series has started with a release of four stamps on sheets with designed margins and coupons. These are the most multilingual stamps in the history of the Olympic Winter Games. The information is given in 6 different languages - Russian, English, French, German, Spanish and Chinese. All the stamp production under the Sochi 2014 philatelic program will be available on a special philatelic subscription in Russian Post departments.

The "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Tourism on the Black Sea Coast of Russia" series comprises four stamps featuring the Sochi places of interest and their surroundings: Krasnaya Polyana, the Harbor Station, the Watchtower on the Bolshoi Akhun mountain and a unique megalithic cultural monument - Volkonsky Quoit at the Sochi National Park. The stamps’ product form is a sheet with designed margins containing four stamps and four coupons with information on all the sites depicted.

The stamps will cost 15, 20, 25 and 30 roubles respectively. Another four stamps in the series "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Tourism on the Black Sea Coast of Russia" is planned for 2012. The circulation of the "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Tourism on the Black Sea Coast of Russia" series consisting of 4 stamps and 4 coupons will be: in Russian – 320 000 lists, in English - 150 000 lists, in Chinese – 130 000 lists, other languages - 120 000 lists each.

On 21 October 2011 these stamps will appear on sheets comprising six stamps and six coupons. The circulation of this additional release will be 840 thousand specimens for each stamp (140 thousand sheets for each subject-matter).

The "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Olympic Winter Sports" sheet opens the "Olympic Winter Sports" series and includes three stamps – "Cross Country Skiing", "Ski Jumping" and "Short Track". These stamps depict skiers hitting the distance in free style, a skier jumping and two ice skaters. The stamps’ product form is a sheet with designed margins containing eight stamps and a coupon. These stamps will cost 25 roubles. The circulation of the "Olympic Winter Sports" series will be 960 000 items per stamp (120 000 lists for each subject-matter). Another six stamps of this series are expected for October 2012. All Sochi 2014 philatelic production will be sold via the Post of Russia offices all over Russia. Alexander Kiselev, Director of the FSUE Russian Post marked:

"With postage stamps and envelopes being dispersed worldwide, we believe it is one of the best ways to commemorate the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. They will become a "business card" to remember the Games and will contribute to promoting Russia and its sporting traditions".

Dmitry Chernyshenko, President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee marked:

"The history of issuing Olympic stamps goes back 115 years, to the first Olympic Games in Athens. I hope that the Sochi 2014 philatelic program will continue the tradition set up at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. More than 70 stamps were issued for that event. This collection will make a great addition for any collector of Olympic artefacts."

Postal and philatelic production has accompanied all modern Olympic Games since 1896. Stamps issued by the country hosting the Games are an integral part of every Olympics and valuable items in philatelic collections.

In total, 4 souvenir sheets, 45 stamps, maxi-cards and postcards will be released in the run up to the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games – with the sets of stamps also being issued on decorative Games-branded envelopes. The themes of the Sochi 2014 postage products will cover winter sports, Olympic sports venues and views of Krasnodar Region.

On 15 March 2011 the memorial cancellation ceremony of a souvenir sheet of stamps reading "Sochi - Capital of the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014" was held. The release of this sheet started the sales of the "Olympic" series of philatelic products. The souvenir sheet depicts the official emblem of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in the background of the snow-covered slopes of Krasnaya Polyana Mountain and a stylized torch with ribbons in the Olympic colours. 120,000 souvenir sheets are currently being distributed via post offices all over Russia.
