(ATR) The Sochi 2014 Olympic Flame will be lit on September 29, Around the Rings has learned.
An official with the HOC, the Greek Olympic Committee, tells ATR the date for the traditional start of the ceremony was recently confirmed. By tradition, the Olympic Flame is lit in Olympia, site of the original Olympic Games, and is organized by the HOC.
No decision has been made on who will be the first torchbearer, but ATR understands the HOC will decide "soon."
Ino Menegaki will be the High Priestess while Artemis Ignatiou will be the choreographer.
Following the lighting, the flame will take a journey through Greece, visiting a number of Greek cities including Delphi, Patras, and Thessaloniki among others.
On October5, the Handover Ceremony to Sochi 2014 will take place at Panathenaic Stadium.
This is believed to be the earliest torch lighting ceremony for a Winter Olympics. Normally, for a Winter Games, the ceremony takes place much closer to the Games, usually in November or December. The Vancouver ceremony took place October 22, 2011.
However, Sochi 2014 organizers have planned an ambitious relay, which will travel for 123 days over 65,000 kilometers and even include a trip into space. The flame will visit all 83 regions of Russia and will be the longest in Winter Olympic history before the Cauldron is lit on February 7 in Sochi.
