Turkey has won the U-18 European Championships in Latvia, building on the country’s national sporting momentum ahead of the IOC’s final decision on the hosts of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games on 7 September.

Turkey beat Croatia 81-74 in a scintillating final to claim their first ever European title. Turkey’s senior men’s basketball team will hope to replicate the same success when they compete in EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia in September.

Istanbul 2020 Bid Chairman, Hasan Arat, said:

"There is so much sporting talent amongst Turkey’s 31 million young people and it is excellent to see this potential is beginning to be fulfilled. But, there is still so much more to come from our young athletes. Istanbul 2020 will realise this untapped potential by stimulating and supporting a dramatic rise in mass sports participation throughout Turkey and the surrounding region."
