(ATR) SK Telecom signed a memorandum of understanding with mobile technology firm Ericsson to develop a 5G network by the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.
The MoU outlines the new technologies both companies will look into in developing a fifth generation network including small cell, ultra-wideband, low latency technology, FDD/TDD convergence technology, and gigabyte-level transmission technology.
"Korea is clearly leading in the uptake of LTE, in terms of technology and subscriber uptake, and SK Telecom is the largest mobile carrier in their market," Thomas Norén, vice president of Ericsson, said in a statement.
The two companies pledged cooperation if the development of new technologies is needed to build the 5G network.
"They are early drivers of technology, and we see them as an important partner in defining new opportunities, innovations, and requirements for the continued evolution of LTE and towards 5G."
