(ATR) Maria Sharapova will learn if her appeal against a two-year doping ban has been successful early next month.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Tuesday it will issue its decision in the arbitration procedure between Maria Sharapova and the International Tennis Federation "during the first week of October".
"In her appeal to the CAS, Ms Sharapova seeks a reduction of the Tribunal’s decision to sanction her with a two-year period of ineligibility further to an anti-doping rule violation," the CAS said in a statement.
CAS had previously said its ruling was expected by Sept. 19.
The Russian tennis star was forced to miss the Rio Olympics and U.S. Open after her appeal against the doping suspension was postponed.
The five-time Grand Slam champion was handed a two-year ban in June after testing positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January. She had lodged an appeal with CAS last month but her request for an expedited procedure in a bid to overturn or reduce her suspension was rejected.
The former world No. 1 player admitted at a press conference in March she had not realized meldonium, a drug she had been taking since 2006, was put on WADA’s banned list at the start of 2016.
Sharapova won a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics. She is one of only 10 women to win a career Grand Slam.
