Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has spoken about the impact of International Inspiration, London 2012's international legacy programme.
Addressing over 500 delegates, including members of the International Olympic Committtee (IOC) in South Africa, Coe outlined the success of the initiative in inspiring young people all around the world to take part in sport - many for the first time in their lives.
During this presentation at the 123rd IOC session in Durban, Coe invited two young South Africans involved in the programme onto the stage with him to talk about the impact International Inspiration has made on their lives. Mohammed and Venessa, two 16 year olds from Durban, have both been trained in youth sport leadership through the International Inspiration programme.
South Africa is one of 16 countries around the world to take part in International Inspiration. In South Africa the programme aims to integrate high quality and inclusive PE, sport and play in targeted schools. It is also raising awareness of issues that affect the security and well-being of young people, such as HIV and AIDS. Working with the Government of South Africa, sport is being used to encourage and motivate children and their families and to develop leadership skills in young people.
To date, 60 tutors and 240 young people across five provinces have received Youth Sport Leadership training. With a focus on the inclusion of girls, this is enabling thousands of young people to take part in high quality and well organised PE and sports activities. School partnerships with the UK are firmly established too with reciprocal visits taking place between the two countries. This has resulted in two-year collaborative plans detailing how schools can share best practice and innovative ideas in PE and sport.
Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: 'International Inspiration is reaching millions of children and young people in 16 countries around the world. The programme is helping change lives and Venessa and Mohammed are testament to what a difference this programme can make. It was delightful meeting two such confident and hopeful young people and I am extremely proud that we are delivering on our promise set out in Singapore to reach young people around the world and connect them to the power of sport.'
Worldwide, International Inspiration has reached 10.8 million children, with 79,000 teachers, coaches and young leaders trained to lead sport, physical education and play in their schools and communities. The vision is to reach 12 million children in 20 countries. International Inspiration is delivered through a partnership between UK Sport, UNICEF, and British Council.
