(ATR) Reports from Japan say that the mayor of Sapporo will announce next week that the city will not bid to become the Japanese candidate for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Kyodo News says that Mayor Fumio Akio will announce the decision at a Tuesday meeting of the city council
Sapporo, host of the 1972 Winter Games, is one of three Japanese cities that have expressed an interest in the 2016 Olympics. The others are 1964 host Tokyo and Fukuoka, the capital of Japan's southernmost island, Kyushu.
The Japanese Olympic Committee plans to decide later this year on a nominee.
A major factor entering into the Sapporo decision may be low public support. A poll conducted in December showed 33 percent of the 10,000 residents polled were in favor of hosting the Summer Olympics; 35 percent were against.
Kyodo News says the city of Sapporo estimates its share of hosting the 2016 Olympics would be $2.1 billion.
