(ATR) Peru’s Olympic chairman Jose Quinones tells Around the Rings the ousting of education minister Jaime Saavedra will not harm preparations for the next Pan American Games.
"One of the reasons of voting out the Minister was that the opposition parties considered that he was not doing enough for the Pan American Games project," Quinones tells ATR.
Saavedra was the only minister to survive Pablo Kuczynski's election as the Peruvian President in June. Quinones says that while Saavedra appointed new Lima 2019 organizing committee president Carlos Neuhaus, Neuhaus is supported by Kuczynski and is not in danger of losing his position.
"The Peruvian President has reconfirmed all his support for the 2019 Pan American Games," Quinones added.
The Lima 2019 Pan Am Games are scheduled to take place from July 26 to Aug. 11. While organizers still have more than two years to prepare for the Games, the Pan American Sports Organization is stressing urgency so that all deadlines are met.
A inspection visit by the PASO Coordination and Technical Commissions in October found that organizers were behind in several key areas of development. The commissions provided PASO delegates with an update on preparations during the 2016 ANOC General Assembly in Doha, Qatar.
"We have concern about the pace of the work and we do not feel comfortable at this juncture," PASO CoComm chair Keith Joseph told the delegates.
Quinones says developments for the next Pan Am Games are now progressing on track.
"At the moment, preparations for the Games are on time and running smoothly."
