(ATR) Cagliari won the right to stage the Rome 2024 Olympic sailing regatta--should the Italian city be selected as 2024 host city.
Cagliari narrowly defeated Bari in the final decision that was announced on Dec. 21. Rome 2024 said the town on the island of Sardinia was selected due to its superior marks in the weather and maritime condition analyses carried out by a Rome 2024 evaluation commission.
The commission opened the application process on Oct. 7 and received 17 submissions from across Italy. The 17 candidates answered questionnaires and were evaluated based on weather conditions and infrastructure before being narrowed down to the two finalists on Nov. 25.
Rome 2024 says Cagliari’s reputation and legacy as a sailing city was another boon to its candidacy.
Cagliari is located 250 miles from Rome.
The World Sailing federation, will visit Cagliari to give its seal of approval to the selection.
Nine Football City Hopefuls for Paris Bid
Paris 2024 shortlisted nine cities in France to host Olympic football matches, with the final set for Parc Des Princes stadium, home to the football club Paris-Saint Germain. The venue has a total capacity just under 49,000. If awarded the Games, the Paris stadium would be the smallest venue to host the final match of the Olympic football tournament since Rome in 1960.
The other eight cities announced include Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Marseilles, Nice, Nantes, Saint-Etienne and Toulouse. The cities chosen represent the largest population bases throughout France. No specific venues were mentioned other than the Paris stadium.
Each of the selected cities will also host matches during the Euro 2016 tournament.
Although nine cities were selected, only eight will make the final list if Paris is awarded the Games in 2017. In total, 58 matches will be played throughout the eight cities.
Budapest, Rome and Los Angeles are the other 2024 bid cities.
London Gold Medalists Leading Paris Athletes Commission
Two of France's biggest names from London 2012 will play a critical role in the Paris 2024 bid.
Paris 2024 said Teddy Riner and Marie-Amelie Le Fur, both gold medalists at the London 2012 Games, will serve as co-chair's of the bid's Athletes' Commission. Riner won Olympic gold in judo while Le Fur won Paralympic gold in the 100m event.
Paris 2024 co-chairman Tony Estanguet, himself a three-time gold medalist in canoeing said the athlete outreach was necessary because"they are the stars of the show and they create the excitement of the Games."
"We now look forward to working with the Athletes’ Committee to progress our Games Plan and their input will be invaluable to guarantee that we succeed in creating the ideal environment for all Olympians in 2024," said
The commission will also be in charge of organizing the French sporting community to show support for the Paris bid.
The Athletes' Committee was established during a Paris 2024 administrative board meeting where the cities that could host football matches during the Games were also announced.
