German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledges Germany will help Brazil stage the 2016 Olympics and 2014 World Cup.

Merkel met with Brazilian President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva on Thursday in Berlin and the two signed a memorandum of understanding covering the two events.

German-Brazilian trade is worth $27 billion; Germany is the largest European trading partner for Brazil.

Brazil is expected to spend more than $300 billion on infrastructure for the games and German companies are hoping to secure some of those contracts.

Rio 2016 Considers Legal Action against Robin WilliamsRio 2016 organizers are considering a lawsuit against Robin Williams when he said Rio won the right to host the Olympics by sending "50 strippers and a pound of blow" to Copenhagen.

Legal action against actor Robin Williams is being considered after he said that Rio de Janeiro won the 2016 Olympics because the city sent "50 strippers and a pound of blow" to the IOC Session in Copenhagen where the decision was made Oct. 2.

The slur last week by Williams on the U.S. TV show “Late Night with David Letterman” (and available on You Tube) has drawn plenty of comment in the Brazilian media. But not Rio 2016.

A spokesman says the organizing committee won’t comment on the remarks by Williams, but adds that attorneys “are analyzing the possibility of legal actions in the United States”.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said Williams was envious of Rio’s success.

An editorial in newspaper O Globo notes that while Williams used “bad form” to slam Rio de Janeiro, Brazilians should pay more attention to silly comments from Brazilian politicians, such as the claim by the head of security for Rio that the city is not violent. Or the time President Lula said TV scenes of police battling gangs “do not speak for themselves”.

“Faced with so much creativity and numerous "jokes" would be difficult to decide who to sue first,” opines O Globo.

“Robin Williams is small potatoes in front of our comedians,” says Elite police negotiators arrive “to talk with the terrorists” during a terrorist attack drill at the Joao Havelange Stadium in Rio. (Getty Images) the paper.

Terrorist Training at 2016 Athletics Venue

Brazilian special-police forces received anti-terrorism training from the French Anti-Terrorist Unit last week.

Hostage situations were simulated inside Joao Havelange Stadium and a subway station. A spokesman for Rio 2016 said “the exercise was very successful”.

The stadium will be the site for athletics events in the 2016 Olympics.

A French officer told O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper the “international events programmed for the city will take place normally.”
