(ATR) The NBC Sports Network registered its highest marks for viewership in a quarter primarily due to the success of the Rio 2016 Olympics.
NBC aired an unprecedented amount of Olympic coverage during the third quarter which helped make NBC Sports Network the number two sports network in the United States throughout the quarter. NBCSN ranked number one in the month of August during the Olympics.
NBC’s Golf Channel also benefited from golf’s return to the Olympic Games after 112 years off the program. The subsidiary reached an average daily audience of 260,000 in the third quarter, up from 159,000 in 2015.
The network’s coverage of the Paralympics also helped bolster ratings. The Rio 2016 Paralympics marked the first time the opening ceremony was shown on American televisions. The Paralympics also garnered nearly 100,000 more viewers per day than the London 2012 Paralympics.
NBC says the coverage was also boosted by other sporting events such as the return of Premier League football matches, Formula 1, NASCAR and IndyCar races as well as major golf tournaments such as The Open at Royal Troon.
