(ATR) With only 389 days until the Games, Rio 2016 organizers say 55 percent of construction for the Games is complete, and work will be finished on time and on budget.
Speaking at a press conference during the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Joaquim Monteiro, president of the city of Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic office, and Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of Rio 2016, updating progress made on the Olympic project.
"All works are on time, according to schedule andwithin the planned budget," Monteiro said during a presentation reported by Brazilian media.
Monteiro said that Rio wanted to avoid "repeating" the delays immediately preceding the 2014 World Cup.
Nuzman said that the final temporary construction measures will begin next year, and "there is no concern" about Rio's readiness.
Previously, Rio Olympic organizers have come under fire for delays in construction, with the IOC repeatedly having to say that Rio does not have a day to lose.
Judge Rules Resumption of Marina Works
A Rio de Janeiro judge says work on the Marina da Gloria sailing venue can begin on July 20.
Work had stopped following protests over a Rio city council decision to cut down 298 trees in Flamengo Park surrounding the marina. According to a report in O GloboJudge Marcelo Pereira da Silva overruled the work stoppage.
The original lawsuit was filed by Federation of Rio Municipality of Neighborhood Associations (FAM-Rio) claiming the project contained "several irregularities." However Judge da Silva ruled on Jul. 11 that the deadline to file an appeal had not been met.
Work on the marina will enlarge the areas for boat moorings while drastically reducing the surrounding retail area. Organizers of the $19-million project say that the number of restaurants will increase after the project.
July 13 was marked by protests the marina.
Sailors flew black flags instead of sails as an act of protest against the construction.
According to O Globo, 25 sailors took part in the protest. Artist Martha Niklaus designed the sails as part of an art piece called "Horizon Black." The flags are reportedly designed to resemble mourning flags.
