Starting today, journalists from all over the world will be able to request press accreditations for the Rio Media Center (RMC), a reference center for the press – accredited or not by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) – to cover the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. A tradition since Sydney 2000 Games, the forecast is for the center to welcome around 8,000 journalists during the period. The RMC opens officially on August 3, 2016 and the approved credentials will be handed on the spot.
A 2,700m2 building, the Rio Media Center will offer all the necessary structure to easy the work of national and foreign journalists, including workstations with cable and high speed Wi-Fi, satellite signal for live broadcasting and radio and TV studios. The facility, which will offer easy access for people with limited mobility, will be open 24h daily and will be able to host up to 600 journalists simultaneously.
The Center will have a 300-seats multiuse auditorium. There will be two TV studios and three radio studios, to be used at no cost (subject to prior reservation) and bilingual assistants to help the journalists. The place will have bathrooms, lounges, a cafeteria and an outdoor area, apart from parking spaces for SNG vans - subject to availability and prior reservation by e-mail.
Press Areas and Content
Those with credentials to the Rio Media Center will have access to a broad journalistic and cultural program. The Center will host press conferences with authorities and athletes, operational briefings, seminars, workshops, cultural events and movies, apart from exclusive content and a diversity of press tours. The RMC will offer free use of standup positions in revealing points of the city, upon prior arrangement. They will be around 15 Press Areas scattered in strategic regions, offering iconic images of the city and the Rio 2016 Games as a background.
A huge success during the World Cup 2014, the Press Area located at the UERJ Terrace (Rio de Janeiro State University) will be available for use by those with RMC credentials. The lookout point has Maracanã Stadium as a background – the place that will hold the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as some football matches. Other Press Areas selected by Rio City Hall include the Leblon Belvedere (Niemeyer ave.), Arpoador beach, Copacabana beach and Barra da Tijuca. Porto Maravilha’s and Madureira Park’s live sites will also offer an area for the Press.
All the content related to the Rio Media Center is in Portuguese, English and Spanish at the official website www.riomediacenter.com.br. It is the best contact tool between journalists and Rio City Hall: it will offer a guide with information about the city and RMC’s organization, FAQ, releases, images and videos – apart from a complete and up-to-date program of the media center. Only registered professionals will have access to the content, which will be available for download. The press releases and photos related to the Rio 2016 Games issued so far by Rio City Hall, the preparation events program and the construction timeline area already available on the website.
The website will keep all the information regarding the center’s detailed agenda and an e-mail will be sent in the future to those who obtained an RMC credential.
Location
A Rio City Hall initiative, the RMC will be located within the Olympic Pavilion, beside the City Hall and Rio 2016 Committee’s headquarters in Cidade Nova. The location is centric and pivotal, being meters away and barely 200mts from Cidade Nova and Estácio subway stations – both connect to train stations. The RMC is close to several bus lines to and from several city areas, and 500mts from Rio Operation Center (COR in Portuguese).
From the RMC the journalists will be able to walk to Sambódromo (where the archery competitions will be held, as well as the marathon’s start and arrival line will be); one-station away is an area with two important Olympic venues: Maracanã and Maracanãzinho Stadiums. Maracanã will host the opening and closing ceremonies, and football matches; Maracanãzinho is the venue for volleyball competitions. Last but not the least, access from the RMC building to other competition venues (Copacabana, Marina da Glória, Lagoa and the Olympic Stadium in Engenho de Dentro), and to the Live Site in Porto Maravilha, is pretty straightforward.
Credentialing
In order to start the process, the professional must initiate the process by registering a login and password at www.riomediacenter.com.br/en/ and then, after receiving a confirmation e-mail, fill up a request for accreditation form at the same website. It is necessary to upload an electronic version of an ID, as well as of a professional recommendation letter. Credentialing is open until April 29, 2016. The issued credentials will be handed straight to the applicant at the RMC’s premises.
It is important to note that the credential is personal and non-transferable, and to be used to access the Center only, neither being valid as a VISA to the country, nor giving access to the sport venues - those are under the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee’s responsibility.
