Rio 2016 Renderings

Around the Rings has received the latest renderings of the Rio 2016 Olympic Park.

The images were supplied by UK Architecture firm AECOM.

The firm originally won the contract back in August, 2011, and became the park’s master planner this past July.

AECOM will design seven of the venues in Rio’s Olympic Park, as well as landscaping and necessary infrastructure.

AECOM previously designed and planned London’s Olympic Park.

Lausanne to Bid for YOG

The Swiss National Olympic Committee’s Congress confirmed Lausanne as Switzerland’s representative for a 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games bid.

The committee, made up of Switzerland’s 80 sports federations, unanimously approved Lausanne as the candidate city.

Lausanne has been considering a potential Winter Youth Olympic Games bid since 2010.

"We are very grateful", said the mayor of Lausanne, Daniel Brélaz.

"This is yet another sign of confidence and a sort of recognition for everything this city has done in favor of international sport over the last decades. We look forward to collaborating with Swiss Olympic in the development of a very strong proposal to the IOC. "

Reactors to be Scrapped as Part of Tokyo Prep

The two Fukushima reactors that survived the 2011 tsunami will be scrapped, per an order from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Reuters reports that Abe is standing by commitments he made to the IOC.

"I will work hard to counter rumors questioning the safety of the Fukushima plant," said Abe.

Abe told Tokyo Electric Power Company to create a plan for dealing with contaminated water leaking from the site, saying, "In order for them to concentrate on this, I have directed them to decommission the No. 5 and No. 6 reactors that are now halted."

A tsunami hit the Fukushima Daiichi plant on March 11, 2011, triggering the world’s worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986.
