(ATR) Mario Cilenti has been appointed the Panam Sports liaison with the Organizing Committee of the Pan American Games that will be inaugurated in Lima in a little over a year.

The announcement was one of the main objectives of the latest two-day visit to the South American capital by the president of Panam Sports Neven Ilic.

The Argentine Cilenti, who has 20 years experience in organizing multi-sport events, "is going to be our eyes" said the general secretary of Panam Sports, Ivar Sisniega, who accompanied Ilic in the inspection that concludes today.

Sisniega tells Around the Rings in exclusive comments that through Cilenti "we are going to follow up on many of the operational issues of the Games".

Cilenti was responsible for the operations of the Olympic and Paralympic Village during the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016.

Most recently, on behalf of ODESUR, he worked in the South American Games held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, last month.

Cilenti, who lives in Miami where last October Panam Sports opened its new office, has helped organize five Olympic Games and an equal number of Pan American Games.

The expert was linked for the first time to the continental sports family by volunteering at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, his hometown, in 1995.

Later, he worked at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg 1999, Santo Domingo 2003, Rio 2007, Guadalajara 2011 and Toronto 2015. Cilenti lived in Toronto from age three to 14.

After the Rio Continental Games in 2007, he was part of the Candidacy Committee that won the Olympic 2016 bid for the city of Rio de Janeiro at the IOC Session in Copenhagen in October 2009.

He has worked on the last five Summer Games beginning with Sydney 2000 as well as contributing to the organization of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England, in 2002.

Cilenti will be a key figure in the transition process when the new buildings in Lima become the sports venues for the Games that will open on July 26, 2019.

This designation "will be a way in which Panam Sports will support Lima," said Sisniega, who revealed that Cilenti will live in the Pan American host city for 15 days of each month starting now.
