ATR) Two years after agreeing to promote the Turin Olympics, national broadcaster RAI has agreed to begin delivering the promise with on-the-air programming with the announcement of a memorandum of understanding between RAI and TOROC.

Experts tell Around the Rings the document may not much different than plans that were discussed in 2003 and in 2004 when the IOC declared that the Turin Olympics were being ignored in Italy.

The MOU calls for programming on terrestrial and satellite channels and the establishment of a broadcast center in Turin.

â??It's a decisive step,â? declared government supervisor for the Olympics Mario Pescante.

RAI also announced its purchase of rights for the Alpine Ski World Cup for the upcoming season as part of its programming platform to promote the 2006 Games.

While the MOU seems to settle outstanding issues involving RAI and the Olympics, the broadcaster is still the only member of the European Broadcast Union cut out of the rights for the 2010 and 2012 Olympics negotiated last year.

The IOC had put discussions with RAI and its rivals about the 2010/2012 Olympic rights on hold while a reorganization of the IOC marketing department was underway. That reorganization will include the hiring of a director for broadcast rights.
