DOHA, Qatar, 7th December 2011: H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Heir Apparent and President of Doha 2020, today declared that Qatar will celebrate an annual ‘National Sports Day’ Public Holiday, commencing in February 2012.

Ahead of the start of the Arab Games 2011, which Doha will host from 9th to 23rd December, H.H. Sheikh Tamim’s announcement marks a historic day for sport in Qatar. The country’s ‘National Sports Day’ Public Holiday will be held on the second Tuesday of February every year to celebrate sport and to create positive awareness about its health and social benefits.

Government ministries and departments, public sector institutions and many private sector organisations will organise sports activities for their employees on the ‘National Sports Day’. With a focus on young people in Qatar, H.H. Sheikh Tamim’s decision to create a ‘National Sports Day’ will help to further embed sporting values into the nation’s culture and inspire local people to participate in sports activities.

Qatar’s ‘National Sports Day’ is also a further example of the country’s commitment to sport, following the existing ‘Schools Olympic Programme’, which provides a valuable opportunity for children to learn about the positive spirit of Olympism, participate in sport and adopt healthy lifestyles.

H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, said: "I am delighted to announce that Qatar will hold a ‘National Sports Day’ every year to celebrate sport in our country and inspire the next generation of sporting athletes.

"As Doha embarks on its bid for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we want to underline Qatar’s commitment to sport and our desire to instil a strong sporting culture in our country’s young population. Sport is central to Qatar’s national vision and initiatives like the ‘National Sports Day’ will help young people in the country engage with sporting activities with positive values that will enable them to have a healthy and prosperous future."

H.E. Abdullah bin Khalid Al Qahtani, Qatar’s Minister of Health and Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Health, added: "The ‘National Sports Day’ will provide a great opportunity for the nation to focus on the positive impact of sport. We want to encourage the whole nation to take part in sport and to learn about the health benefits that regular sporting activity can provide.

"With this annual celebration of sport and the whole nation taking part, we can foster a strong sporting culture in Qatar that will create a positive cultural and social legacy for generations to come."
