PyeongChang Bid Tops Around the Rings' Olympic Bid Power Index

A commanding lead in public opinion helps put PyeongChang atop of the three-city race to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The South Korean bid heads the chart with 77 out of 100 possible points in the 11-category index. Munich is in second with 74 points, while Annecy has earned true underdog status with 67 points as the race heads into a crucial three-month stretch to the July 6 IOC vote.

"The Olympic Bid Power Index is the most comprehensive, authoritative review of bid cities' efforts there is. It is closely watched by senior executives across the Olympic Movement, and is a good example of the depth of knowledge that has made Around the Rings number one for 20 years," said publisher Sheila Scott Hula.

The 11 categories range from ambience to venue plans, others are based on numbers provided by the bid cities or gathered by ATR.

The Bid Power Index cites PyeongChang’s experience of three consecutive bids and support of the national government and public as reasons for its high score.

Munich places in a close second behind PyeongChang due in part to popular team members including IOC member Thomas Bach and Katrina Witt.

Annecy’s public opinion and scattered venues puts the French city behind the other two bid cities.

"After an inauspicious start to its 2018 bid, there is a lingering suspicion that France has its sights set on the 2020 Olympics prize and is only staying the course in this campaign to strengthen its standing in the Olympic Movement," the Bid Power Index says.

Now in its seventh year, the Power Index is compiled by the experts at Around the Rings, all of whom have studied and followed the bids from their inception, including multiple visits to each city.

The rankings are not meant to predict the outcome of the IOC vote in July, but to show the relative strengths and weaknesses of the cities.
