The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Bid Committee today departed for Durban, South Africa, where the 123rd International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session and the key vote to decide the Host City of the 2018 Winter Games will take place.

The senior members of the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee on board the special Korean Air plane, which departed from Seoul’s international Incheon Airport, were Mr. Byoung-gug Choung, Korea’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Mr. Jin-sun Kim, former Governor of Gangwon Province and Special Ambassador for PyeongChang 2018 and Mr. Do Bong Ha, Secretary General of PyeongChang 2018. Additional members of the delegation on board the flight were Korean athlete ambassadors and five members of the National Assembly.

The PyeongChang 2018 delegation leaving Seoul today will be joined in Durban by other senior members of the Bid Committee who recently attended the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) General Assembly on 27 June, including Yuna Kim, reigning Olympic Ladies Figure Skating Champion and Mr. Yang Ho Cho, Chairman and CEO of PyeongChang 2018.

Yuna Kim, reigning Figure Skating Olympic Champion, said: "It is a great honour for me to support PyeongChang 2018 in this crucial time ahead of the IOC Host City decision.

"PyeongChang 2018’s bid is a national priority and Korea is committed to developing winter sports in the country. Our new ‘Drive the Dream’ programme will see 440 million US Dollars being invested from 2012 to 2018 to develop Korean winter sports athletes – athletes who can go on to become Olympic Champions just like me."

Yang Ho Cho, Chairman and CEO of PyeongChang 2018, said: "As our team heads to South Africa, I am reminded of the importance of our campaign message of ‘New Horizons’. Our bid is founded on the desire to help the Olympic Movement expand to new regions of the world and connect with new audiences.

"When we have the honour of presenting directly to the IOC Members on 6 July we will showcase how a Winter Games in Korea can help spread important Olympic values to a new part of the world, help a young and dynamic population in Asia connect with winter sports, and inspire a new generation of winter sport athletes."
