(ATR)Minor league baseball players can participate in the 2015 Pan American Games, Major League Baseballofficials tell FOX Sports.
The 2015 Pan Am Games will run July 10-26 in Toronto, the provincial capital of Ontario, Canada.Over 7,000 athletesfrom across Latin America, South America, the Caribbean and North America will compete in 36 sports.
MLB-affiliated players, not protected on 40-man rosters, will be eligible for the seven-team tournament at the Games. The tournament includes the United States and defending Pan Am champion Canada, baseball officials say.
Following the 2008 Summer Olympics, the IOC dropped baseball and softball from the Olympic Program. The MLB is a major financial supporter of the World Baseball Softball Confederation's effort to reinstate both sports for the 2020 Tokyo Games, according to FOX Sports.
In addition to Canada and the U.S., teams fromCuba, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic have secured bids for the Games.
"The seventh entrant [from South America] will be determined by a qualifier in early March, and rosters for the tournament will consist of 24 players," Toronto 2015 spokesman Teddy Katz says.
According to Baseball Canada, this year's Pan Am tournament will run July 11-19 in Ajax, Ontario, outside Toronto.
Restrictions for HOV Lanes During Pan Am Games
(ATR) This summer, additional high-occupancy vehicle lanes will be introduced on all major highways in the Greater Toronto Area.
Drivers caught trying to sneak in the Pan Am HOV lanes will risk a $110 fine and three demerit points, according to Canadian news agency Full-Time Whistle. In Ontario, demerit points are added to a person's driver's license when he or she is convicted of breaking certain driving laws.
"Police will monitor vehicle use of the HOV lanes on GTA highways and take appropriate action should a driver not be adhering to the requirement established for the Pan Am Games of having at least two passengers in the vehicle on both existing HOV lanes and those established for the Games," Ontario provincial police sergeant Peter Leon said.
"A Place in Sport For All" at Toronto 2015
(ATR) A Toronto-based advocacy group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer athletes wants Toronto 2015 to be the most inclusive Pan Am Games ever.
In speaking with TheHamilton Spectator, Pride House official John Jansen said, "We're committed to making sure there's a place in sport for all."
Jansen, co-chair ofPride House Toronto's volunteer engagement logistics team, tells TheSpecthat anti-LGTBQ ideals will not be welcome at Toronto 2015.
"We want to make sure that anyone going to participate in the Pan Am Games as an athlete, a coach or as a spectator knows that homophobia, bi-phobia and trans-phobia do not have a place in our shared environments,"Jansen said.
Pride House first appeared onsite at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The group then attended the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Spec reporter Steve Milton says that in 2014, "The Russian justice ministry essentially refused to allow a Pride House at the Sochi Olympics."
He adds, "Some 30 other Pride Houses sprung up around the world during those Games in response.
"Toronto's was the biggest and most active."
