The City of Lausanne, the Olympic Capital, is pleased to announce that Mr. Michael Knight, former Minister of the Olympics for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, will be joining the impressive list of keynote speakers for the Lausanne Summit, held on October 9-11, in Lausanne, Switzerland.

As both Minister for the Olympics in the Government of the State of New South Wales and President of the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG), Michael Knight headed the key organizations which delivered the Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mr. Knight had a concentration of authority and responsibilities that is unique in the organizing of modern Olympic Games. He was ultimately accountable for the construction program as well as the overall operations of the Games themselves. He was also the Minister for the Olympic Roads and Transport Authority (ORTA). He also chaired the organization which provided live television coverage of the Games to the international rights holders.

Mr. Knight will be addressing the Lausanne Summit on the topic of socio-political opportunities related to hosting the Olympic Games. Drawing on his experience he will discuss how hosting a major event allows different departments within the city to work together and build new relations that allow for things to move ahead with more efficiency. His keynote address will also touch upon the different social effects that major sports events can bring to the city.

The Lausanne Summit will be the first ever gathering of Olympic Cities. In the Olympic Capital, the Summit will bring together the Mayors and Senior Representatives of cities who have organized, will organize, or are considering organizing the Olympic or Youth Olympic Games. Joining together for the first time, past Olympic hosts will share experiences that will help to further build the platform for the future success of each and every Olympic and Youth Olympic Games to come. Future hosts will have many of their questions answered through this platform created to exchange knowledge and experiences.

President of the IOC, Dr. Jacques Rogge, said: “With the recent closing of the Beijing Olympics, all of us can appreciate the complexity of putting such a large scale event together. Mr. Knight's presence at the Lausanne Summit is a unique opportunity to learn from his experience of hosting very successful and inspiring Games in Sydney. The 2000 Olympic experience has helped both Athens and Beijing in organizing great Games as well.”
