Britain’s top discus thrower Lawrence Okoye has recreated the iconic image from the London 1948 Olympic Games poster. The photograph, taken outside the Houses of Parliament in London, was commissioned by British Airways - official airline partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralmypic Games.
The 20 year-old from Croydon, who has been tipped to pick up a medal next year, pays homage to the official poster of the 1948 Olympic Games – the last time the Games were held in London.
The image will form part of a limited edition British Airways 2012 calendar that the airline will give to athletes and customers.
Lawrence Okoye, said: "The 1948 image is incredibly striking and it was an honour to help recreate this shot with British Airways. I love how it’s turned out. I’ll be getting a copy framed for the house – hopefully this time next year it’ll be on the mantelpiece alongside a gold medal!"
British Airways is dedicated to helping British talent take off and is proud to support the current discus Under-23 European Champion, who earlier this year threw a personal best of 67.63 metres.
Luisa Fernandez, British Airways sponsorship manager said: "We have a long standing history in supporting British talent, so it’s quite fitting to recreate this shot for a modern day audience."
Earlier this year, the airline launched its BA Great Britons programme to discover and support British talent in food, art and film. Pascal Anson, the winner of the art category is now working with Turner Prize nominated artist and Royal Academician Tracey Emin to produce an iconic piece of artwork for the livery of a number of British Airways aircraft in operation during the London 2012 Games.
British Airways customers can get their hands on one of 50 exclusive calendars on the airline’s official Facebook page (facebook.com/britishairways) - keep tuned throughout December!
