Pope’s Visit and World Youth Day in Rio
Pope Francis continues his Brazil tour for World Youth Day (WYD) and blesses the Olympic and Paralympic flags at Rio’s City Palace.
The famous Popemobile arrived in Rio on July 15. The Pope began his tour of Brazil earlier this week. The tour began with a bomb scare near the Pope's arrival site, riots, and masses of admiring fans.
WYD 2013 continues to attract masses of young Catholics to Rio de Janeiro.
The Pope addressed WYD participants during a prayer service on Thursday. He then visited Varginha, one of Rio’s most violent slums, to demonstrate his focus on reaching out to the poor – which somewhat rattled his security team’s nerves.
WYD 2013 represents Rio’s biggest logistical test ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Rio 2016 organizers will participate in a WYD observer program at Rio’s Center for Command and Control on Thursday. The program is being organized by the Olympic Public Authority, and will allow Rio 2016 organizers an insight into operations for large-scale events such as WYD.
"The lessons learned will certainly be incorporated in our Games time planning and we already work in close partnership with the security and other agencies through workgroups and liaison officials within our team and we are highly integrated throughout the project," a spokesman for Rio 2016 said in a statement to Around The Rings.
The next host diocese will be announced during the closing ceremony on Sunday.
Jack Kelly, 68
Jack Kelly, a respected and beloved sports event organizer, lost his battle with cancer this week. Kelly organized the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky, but he is also known for his work leading the Goodwill Games and several editions of the former U.S. Olympic Festival.
"The sporting world has lost one of the great ones in Jack Kelly. We have all lost a dear friend, mentor and confidant," says Greg Harney of Cartan Tours. "Very rarely in our industry does one possess a keen business sense, operational and marketing skills but John P. Kelly was certainly one of them.
Kelly was a petroleum company executive in Texas when he embarked upon his career in sport event administration. His company, Event Partners Inc., also advised cities bidding for Olympic Games and other major sports events. At the time of his death, he was advising Reno Tahoe on its Winter Olympics ambitions.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy, and a son and a daughter.
Funeral services are set for July 28 in Kentucky.
