(ATR) Barcelona will not bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
According to a report in El Pais, newly-elected Mayor Ada Colau said that her coalition will focus on the housing and grassroots sports across the Mediterranean rather than an Olympic bid.
Barcelona had considered bidding for the 2022 Olympics before the previous administration said they would focus on a 2026 bid.
Former Mayor Xavier Trias said in October 2013 that the "conditions didn’t exist for 2022, and [Barcelona] must concentrate its efforts and commitment to work to reach the Olympic target by 2026."
Colau, a newcomer to politics, held her first executive committee meeting as mayor of Barcelona on Jun. 17, where the decision was made. The leftist mayor’s first focus since taking office has been on enforcing "the legal right to housing" in a city where many face evictions by financial institutions.
