(ATR) On the last night of athletics at the London Paralympics, Oscar Pistorius defends his 400m title.
The South African won in front of a capacity crowd at Olympic Stadium for the final race of the 2012 Games, setting a record time of 46.68 seconds.
U.S. runners Blake Leeper and David Prince were second and third. Brazil’s Alan Oliveira, who beat Pistorius for the gold in the 200m last Sunday, was fourth in the 400m.
The medal for Pistorius was his first individual gold and his third of the Games.
"Tonight, I can’t even tell you how amazing tonight was for me," he told reporters shortly after the race.
"I didn’t leave anything to spare, when I stepped on the track I left everything out here and my body’s pretty tired."
"I didn’t get all the medals I wanted but I got three and two world records and a Parlympic record so I think that’s pretty awesome."
Pistorius praised Sebastian Coe and the rest of the LOCOG staff.
"Their attention to detail has made this the most successful Olympic and Paralympic Games and I think the world has finally seen that Paralympic sport is truly elite. It’s been a humbling blessing being here."
Competition ends Sunday in the London Paralympics with the marathon and finals for seven-a-side football and wheelchair rugby.
China leads the medals table with 131, followed by 118 for Great Britain and 101 for Russia.
