(ATR) Carlos Neuhaus is replacing Luis Salazar as president of the next Pan American Games organizing committee.
Salazar stepped down as president of Lima 2019 on Sep. 28 citing a lack of congressional support in Peru.
"I was treated like a criminal in the Audit Commission, two hours of interrogation, only for telling the truth, which was the fact that the first call I received regarding the Pan American Games came from the former first lady," he said in a radio interview.
President of the Peruvian Olympic Committee Jose Quinones told El Comercio he was surprised by the announcement.
"I had no prior knowledge of this decision. I will communicate with PASO [Pan American Sports Organization] to tell them about this resignation," said Quinones.
Quinones tells Around the Rings the Peruvian government did not hesitate to replace Salazar with Carlos Neuhaus.
"He is the President of the Surfing National Federation and a well respected private entrepreneur," Quinones tells ATR. "He already talked with PASO President Julio Maglione and I am sure he is the right person to run this project."
Although Salazar said he faced government opposition, Quinones says Peru’s new President Pedro Kuczynski has reaffirmed support for the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima.
"[He] had a phone conversation with Mr. Maglione, and he assured his support for Lima 2019," he tells ATR. "He will receive Mr. Maglione at the end of next month. We are all confident that our Games will be a great success."
The Lima 2019 Pan Ams are scheduled to take place from July 26 to Aug. 11.
