From Africa’s southernmost city to the French Riviera, international organization Peace and Sport is calling on runners to ‘be part of what matters’ by taking on a superb sporting challenge for a fantastic cause.
Peace and Sport in Nelson Mandela’s homeland on the eve of International Peace Day
As official charity partner of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon for the second year running, Peace and Sport is offering bibs to athletes looking to run the 42.195 km for a charitable cause. To take on the challenge in the streets of Cape Town for the peace through sport movement, runners have to make a minimum fundraising pledge of 300 euros for Peace and Sport. The money raised will go towards the projects that Peace and Sport supports in the Great Lakes region of Africa.
The marathon will take place on 20 September, a day before International Peace Day, and its Organizing Committee includes Olympic medallist and Peace and Sport Champion for Peace Elana Meyer. "Events like the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and the Cape Town Peace 10km present a great platform to promote and exhibit change. Peace in the broadest sense is part of the DNA of the event. The event is carbon neutral, supports local charities and incorporates a peace and sport symposium" says Meyer, who in 1992 won silver in the 10,000 metres at the Barcelona Games.

Peace and Sport at the Nice-Cannes Marathon for the fourth consecutive year!
Since 2012, Peace and Sport has been one of the charity partners for the French Riviera’s flagship running event, the Nice-Cannes Marathon. Previous editions have seen various Champions for Peace including Marc Raquil, Wilson Kipketer and Paula Radcliffe tread the 42.195km dividing Nice’s Promenade des Anglais and La Croisette boardwalk in Cannes alongside thousands of amateur runners, to promote the peace through sport movement.
This year, athletes wanting to get involved in this great cause will be able to buy Peace and Sport ‘coupons’ at five euros each when signing up for the marathon. The money raised will be used to finance the Friendship Games, the seventh edition of which is taking place in August 2015. An annual sporting event bringing together youngsters from Burundi, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo, the Friendship Games aim to encourage the young participants to accept each other’s cultural, ethnic and national backgrounds and build lasting friendships.
Peace and Sport will also have a stand at the Nice-Cannes Marathon Expo during the event. In this friendly and informal space, runners will be able to meet Peace and Sport Champions for Peace and help make the Nice-Cannes marathon a ‘peace through sport’ success!
