Madrid 2020 is a bid focused on athletes and sport.

Pau Gasol has been chosen to speak with the Madrid 2020 team before the members of the International Olympic Committee. Gasol, one of Spain’s greatest athletes is a two-time NBA world Champion and a two-time Olympic Silver Medalist; he will speak on behalf of Spanish athletes. On September 7, millions of people around the world will listen as he shares why Madrid 2020’s bid, makes sense now, more than ever.

"Many athletes in Spain would have been proud to be a part of our team. Given Spain’s sporting success, there were many options. It was a hard decision but we finally chose Pau Gasol. We are very excited having Pau represent Spanish athletes; firstly because there is a personal friendship between us, and secondly because he was our flag bearer in the London Games", said Alejandro Blanco, President of the Bid and of the Spanish Olympic Committee.

"All of our athletes would have played a remarkable role, but we selected Pau and asked him to help us, because he is not only a great sportsman, but he also demonstrates exceptional personal values that go beyond sport and reach out to the youth of the world", he highlighted.

For his part, Pau stated he was honoured to represent the Madrid Bid. "The Olympic Games are more than sport – I know this personally as an Olympian. Spanish sport and the people of Madrid need the boost the Olympic Games would provide, and Madrid is ready to face this challenge. But Madrid will also give something back to the Olympic Movement – we are a city that is prepared with a responsible bid plan that will help develop sport far into the future", he said.
