(ATR) The ruling Pan American Sports Organization ExecutiveCommittee meets Tuesday to review procedures forthe presidential vote in whch incumbent Mario Vazquez Rana is the only candidate
PASO rules spell out how a candidate wins an election with two or more contestants – 50 percent plus one vote – but what happens if there is one candidate who fails to pass 50 percent is unclear.
If Vazquez Rana does lose the election, he could cease to be PASO president immediately, potentially throwing the PASO General Assembly into turmoil, something else the EC hopes to solve.
The election takes place Wednesday in Mexico City at the open of the two-day PASO Assembly, taking place at the Hotel Intercontinental.
Traditionally a press conference is held following the closed-door EC meeting, but it's unclear whether there will be one following Tuesday’s meeting.
The other major points of business that are being overshadowed by Vazquez Rana’s vote are elections for other PASO officers and the opening of the 2019 Pan American Games race.
While the agenda for the General Assembly could last for two days, it could also go as long as three days – or could be over within hours if Vasquez Rana fails to be reelected.
Only one race for the vice presidential races will be contested: GroupTwo.
Michael Fennell of Jamaica is the current VP but is being challenged by Keith Joseph, secretary general for the Saint Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee.
In Group One, Mexico's Ivar Sisniega, sports director for the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara remains the only candidate after Fernando Beltrenana of Guatemala and Felipe Munoz of Mexico withdrew.
Carlos Nuzman of Brazil is the sole candidate in Group Three.
