While the European Sustainable Development Week was concluded just a few days, the City of Paris, Amaury Sport Organization and partners recall their commitments to reduce pollution events in the capital.
The Mayor of Paris, Amaury Sport Organization and its partners initiated in the last Schneider Electric Paris Marathon a CSR policy (Corporate Social Responsibility Company) high, in the heart of a global approach.
"Together, let us pledge to responsible Marathon": this is the meaning of political business in 2017. Fifteen actions have been implemented with the goal of making Schneider Electric Paris Marathon marathon and a test sports, mastering its footprint and become carbon neutral. Three main areas were identified: waste management, reduction and carbon footprint compensation and innovation for future generations through the "Generation Maratheens" operation.
Waste management
Their reduction, collection and recycling, awareness campaign among competitors as well as the multiplication of containers and collection zones on the course of the test, began to bear fruit: 19.7 tons of bottles were collected, against 18 tonnes in 2016, thanks to the mobilization of Vittel, the test partner. 4.72 tonnes of food waste were collected 3 tons against last year. The volume of textile, it is 18 m 3 clothes left behind by competitors against 12 m 3 last year who joined the recycling. The bulk of the products on refueling, removing packaging especially for the goodies, medals and T-shirts, significantly reduced garbage resulting from 34 tonnes in 2016 to 20.15 tons in 2017.
carbon offsetting
70% of CO2 emissions from Schneider Electric Paris Marathon (which represent 26 200 tonnes CO2 eq), were offset by Schneider Electric partner under test and ASO who have invested in a project deployed in Kenya ( nursery of talented athletes) by the "Livelihoods Carbon Fund." Each year, with 50 000 hectares of forest disappear in Kenya - almost 5 times the area of Paris. One reason for this deforestation is the use of wood for cooking by local people. The Livelihoods project is to equip families to more efficient wood homes, reducing their consumption by 60%. Today, 300,000 people benefit from this program.
"Generation Maratheens"
Finally, the number of children 10 and 11 years enjoying educational and sports activities in order to promote running, was doubled compared to last year to reach 1408 young riders become , supervised by the Directorate of Youth and Sports.
All these actions, including the implementation of results from the application of the Charter of eco-responsible events of the City of Paris and a broad dialogue between all stakeholders (competitors, Mayor of Paris, partners, organizers), s' intensify next year and the following years. Areas for improvement will be studied and developed, open new sites, so that the Schneider Electric Paris Marathon to benefit from the highest standards of sustainable development.
