Sochi, 7 March 2014 – Paralympian Mami Sato yesterday carried the Paralympic torch in Sochi on the eve of the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

"I am delighted and extremely honoured to have been selected to carry the Paralympic flame. It was a fantastic experience. One that will stay with me for the rest of my life," she said afterwards.

"The Paralympic flame is a symbol of our movement; it represents the efforts of all the athletes and symbolizes our values - Determination, Courage, Equality and Inspiration. I hope that the arrival of the flame here today, on the eve of the Opening Ceremony, will contribute to igniting enthusiasm and passion for the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games. I am sure the Games will be just as successful as the Olympic Winter Games were, and I hope the athletes perform to the peak of their abilities and inspire the world with their strong showing," she added.

Apart from her duties as a torchbearer, Mami Sato will be promoting the Tokyo 2020 Games amongst members of the Paralympic family in Sochi. She was chosen as the first speaker for the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee’s final presentation at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 7 September 2013. Her emotional speech as well as her active involvement throughout the campaign are considered significant factors in Tokyo’s successful bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"Tokyo is the host city of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020. We are looking forward to letting members of the Paralympic family know about Tokyo’s plans to stage a fantastic and unforgettable Games, and the warm welcome they will be guaranteed in Tokyo," she said.

Mami Sato competed in the Women’s Long Jump events at the Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Paralympic Games.
