Five spots on the Panam Sports Athlete Commission will be up for grabs during the Lima 2019 Pan American Games that begin in July. Nomination forms have been sent to the 41 National Olympic Committees of Panam Sports.
With the next edition of the Pan American Games now less than 200 days away, it is time to begin the process of choosing the next athlete leaders of the Americas.
Five new athletes will be joining the Panam Sports Athlete Commission at the conclusion of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games on August 11. But before then, National Olympic Committees must nominate one athlete from their country to be eligible for election by the Lima 2019 participating athletes.
Panam Sports sent the nomination forms to each of the 41 NOCs of the Americas at the end of January. Each NOC will have until May to submit an athlete for the election, with only one athlete nominee per country allowed.
The deadline for NOCs to submit the Nomination Form to office@panamsports.org is May 1, 2019.
Athletes who are interested in becoming an Athlete Commission member should consult their NOC leaders for consideration as a nominee. Those who are elected during the Lima 2019 Pan Am Games will serve an eight-year term helping improve the rights of athletes throughout the continent.
Every athlete who participates in the Lima 2019 Pan Am Games will have a chance to vote for who they think should fill the five available positions throughout the two weeks of competition.
Those who are elected will join current Athlete Commission members Carlos Santiago (PUR), Adriana Escobar (ESA) and Aliann Pompey (GUY) who will continue to serve until the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. Athletes from Puerto Rico, El Salvador and Guyana will be ineligible for election at Lima 2019 because these countries already have a representative on the Commission.
Once the votes are cast during the Games, the announcement of the five new members will take place on August 11, before the Closing Ceremony of Lima 2019. Panam Sports will ensure those elected provide a gender, sport and regional balance to the Athlete Commission.
Panam Sports deeply thanks the Athlete Commission members who will be leaving the commission in July, including current President Alexandra Orlando (CAN), Andrea Estrada (GUA), Thiago Pereira (BRA), Mijain Lopez (CUB) and Guillermo Perez (MEX).
