(ATR) The 2015 Pan Am Games new torch design is on display for residents and tourists of Toronto for this week only as part of Ontario’s "March Break" activities and events.
The design was unveiled on March 16 along with the official torch bearers uniform and torch relay route.
The CN Tower will play host to the torch for the remainder of the week until it is taken down on Friday. The CN Tower is the tallest free standing building in North America, and is a prominent symbol for both Canada and Toronto.
Once the torch is taken down, fans of the Pan Am Games will have to wait until the torch relay begins with its traditional lighting at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico at the end of May. Once lit, the torch will begin its journey by plane to Canada.
Beginning on May 30 in Teotihuacan, the relay will span 15,000 kilometers by air and 5,000 on the road throughout numerous Ontario communities as well as five other Canadian provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec and Nova Scotia. The relay will come to an end in Toronto for the opening ceremonies on July 10.
"When the torchbearers carry the flame through our great city, they will ignite a sense of pride and community in the lead up to the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. I encourage all Torontonians to come out and cheer on the torchbearers and share in the experience," Toronto Mayor John Tory said after the announcement of therelay.
TO2015 has made the route available for PDF download here.
The torch relay will also be carried by over 60 different types of transportation and boasts a total of 3,000 torch bearers, each assigned to complete a 200-meter stretch of the route.
Along with the designs for the torch, uniform and relay route, the first 10 torch bearers were also announced on Monday. One of the most notable of the first selected is two-time Olympic medalist Simon Whitfield.
"A torch relay is powerful and patriotic ... I’m looking forward to that moment as it truly is an honor to represent my community and Canada," the 1999 Pan Am bronze medalist said following the announcement.
The remaining torch bearers will be notified and announced throughout the month of March. Final confirmation emails regarding details of the relay will be sent to participants in April.
