Singapore, 25 June 2010 – More than 7,000 youth performers will come together to perform for a global audience at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies on 14 and 26 August 2010 respectively. Out of these, over 4,000 youths are students from 47 national schools (primary and secondary schools, as well as junior colleges).
At the Mandai Hill Camp this morning, more than 800 students from seven schools came together to rehearse two Opening Ceremony performance segments:
• The Olympic Rings formation segment: By students from Broadrick Secondary School, Choa Chu Kang Secondary School, North Vista Secondary School, Queenstown Secondary School and Clementi Woods Secondary School;
• Industrial Drummers for the Origins segment: By students from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Fuhua Secondary School and Cedar Girls’ School.
Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen, visited the rehearsal grounds to show his support and to convey his appreciation to the performers, teachers, supporting staff and parents for taking part in the Ceremonies.
Dr. Ng said, "Our students, teachers and the production team have put a lot of effort into their performance items, including spending part of their school holidays for the rehearsals. With their dedication and hard work, I am confident that our students will put up a great show and make the Opening Ceremony an enjoyable, meaningful and unforgettable experience for the spectators and audiences around the world."
Choreographing the Youth Mix
With more than 7,000 youth performers in the Ceremonies and a team of 23 choreographers under him, Chief Choreographer, Aaron Khek, has the task of pulling all the performance segments together seamlessly. Another challenge that Aaron faces is to connect with and inspire the youth performers, and to keep them motivated until the big show on 14 August.
The Opening Ceremony will feature the largest combination of different dance styles in a show.
