Today, the City of Oslo and the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the Confederation of Sports (Norwegian NOC), officially submitted the application to be considered as a Candidate City for the 24thWinter Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2022.
Proud Olympic and Paralympic hosts
– We would be proud to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2022, and we strongly believe in our concept that we have developed over the last two years. By hosting sustainable Games with the athletes and spectators at the core of the concept, Oslo 2022 wants to be an active and responsible contributor and partner to the Olympic and Paralympic movement. The City of Oslo looks forward to a good working relationship with the IOC in the bid process to come, says Governing Mayor City of Oslo and President of the Oslo 2022 Bid Committee, Mr. Stian Berger Røsland.
The bid has been developed in full partnership between the Norwegian NOC and the City of Oslo, and the two parties stays committed to the application submitted today to the IOC. An overwhelming majority of the Oslo City Council stands firmly behind the bid, along with the Norwegian sports movement. At a local referendum held in Oslo, 55 % voted in favor of hosting the Games in 2022. An application for a governmental guarantee is currently being considered by the national government, to be decided in the autumn of 2014.
A celebration of sports for all
– Norway is a nation with a great passion for winter sports. In 2022 our ambition is to share our genuine passion for winter sports, and invite the world to an open, friendly and sustainable celebration of sports for all. We endorse and share the goals and the values of the Olympic Movement to contribute to the development of a better world through sport, promoting a peaceful society and preserving human dignity, says President of the NOC and Vice President of the Oslo 2022 Bid Committee, Mr. Børre Rognlien.
An unforgettable Olympic experience
The City of Oslo and the Norwegian NOC have made extensive preparations for the bid. The capital of Norway can host most of the disciplines – both on snow and on ice – within the Oslo City limits. Lillehammer will host the alpine events along with bobsleigh, luge and skeleton.
– The biggest winter sports event in the world will be brought to life in an integrated, urban atmosphere. The competition venues will be located in a semi-circle around the city – a mere ten to twenty minutes from the athletes and the media villages. We wish to facilitate a convenient, personal and unforgettable Olympic experience for the athletes and the spectators, says Vice Mayor City of Oslo, Mr. Hallstein Bjercke.
