(ATR) Oslo 2022 proposes "possible" adjustments to bid in an attempt to win public support.
On Friday, Oslo 2022 published a statement regarding their "possible concept adjustments." Oslo has faced massive public backlash over the costs of the Olympics and must secure a government financial guarantee for the bid. The announcement is an attempt to convince Norwegian politicians to support Oslo 2022.
"As input towards the ongoing national political process on a Government guarantee, the Oslo 2022 Bid Committee has presented possible areas of the concept where there might be room for adjustments," Oslo 2022 CEO Eli Grimsby said.
She went on to say that Oslo 2022 would trim its budget by some $680 million. They would do through "responsible re-use of iconic sports arenas such as Holmenkollen, Kvitfjell and Hafjell, and on a sustainable development of the City of Oslo," Grimsby said.
Mayor of OsloStian Birger Røsland, endorsed the changes.
"There has been considerable skepticism towards the amount of money needed," he was quoted by Norwegian media on Thursday."I think it would have been irresponsible of us to not present alternatives."
The Norwegian government is expected to vote on a financial guarantee for Oslo 2022 this fall.
Oslo is running against Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan for the right to stage the 2022 Olympics. The IOC will select a host in 2015.
