(ATR) A clash between soldiers and gang members in the 2016 Olympic host city left one dead on Wednesday.

Soldiers stationed in the Mare slum complex broke up a skirmish between two rival gangs, which lead to a period of gun fighting, which caused the death. The authorities said that the deceased was a member of one of the gangs.

According to the AP, soldiers have been stationed in Mare since April in an effort to keep that area of the city safe ahead of the 2016 Olympics.

The soldiers come from Brazil's navy, who said that the gangs were suspected drug traffickers.

The AP reported the incident disrupted traffic in the area, where civilians ducked behind concrete stanchions to avoid the gun fighting.
