The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, visited on Thursday, July 10th, the headquarters of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), in Rio de Janeiro, and knew the entity's sports planning for the Olympic Games Rio 2016. Received by Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of COB, Bach praised the entity's work to place Brazil among the Top 10 in the medal standings of the event. This is the first time a president of IOC visits COB.
The following also attended the meeting: Nawal El Moutawakel, vice president of IOC and president of the Coordination Commission for the Olympic Games Rio 2016; Gilbert Felli, IOC's executive director for Olympic Games; Bernard Rajzman, IOC member; Luis Fernandes, executive secretary of the Ministry of Sports, representing Aldo Rebelo, Minister of Sports; COB directors and presidents of Brazilian Olympic Federations, as well as athletes and former athletes, like Thiago Pereira (swimming), Giba (volleyball), Fabiano Peçanha and Robson Caetano (athletics), Hortência (basketball) and Gabriela Secchini (fencing), among others.
COB's projects for 2016 were presented by Marcus Vinicius Freire, COB's Sports Executive Director, who detailed various actions being implemented by the entity in this Olympic cycle to support the preparation of the Brazilian Olympic athletes.
The president of IOC pointed out the professionalism of COB's work and the investments that are being made in behalf of the athletes. "The Brazilian Olympic Committee is making every possible effort to deliver a great performance in the Olympic Games Rio 2016. It is important to notice how you are using Sports Science in this process because all we can do is to give athletes the opportunity to shine," said the president of IOC. "Keep up this work for the success of your athletes. I am sure we will have a big celebration in 2016 and the world will see what Brazil can do. Good luck!", wished Bach, Olympic fencing champion in the Games Montreal 1976.
After the presentation, Thomas Bach toured the premises of COB's headquarters and talked with employees of the entity. Besides the positive impression of COB's sports planning for 2016, the German was satisfied with the organization and structure of the Committee's work.
"It's a great honor to receive at our Committee, for the first time in history, the visit of an IOC president - the Olympic champion Thomas Bach", said Nuzman, president of COB. "It's important to show our projects and how we are working towards sustainable development of the Brazilian Olympic sports, which goes beyond winning medals at the 2016 Games," said Nuzman.
During the visit, Bach unveiled a plaque celebrating the 100th anniversary of COB. The president of IOC is in Brazil to watch the final of the World Cup between Germany and Argentina.
