(ATR) The Vancouver 2010 flame advances travel around the Newfoundland and Labrador route on Day 15 of the torch relay through the Great Northern Peninsula.
Yesterday highlights include the torch being carried through the northern Labrador coast community of Hopedale with an approximate population of 620. The flame progressed to the Norse village of L’Anse aux Meadows known to be an archaeological site located on the northernmost tip of the island of Newfoundland. The torch rested in the fishing village of St. Anthony.
Today, the torch has multiple destinations with the town of Cape Spear being the first stop. The flame will then travel to the town of Petty Harbour where the torch will take a ride in a traditional Newfoundland fishing dory. The next destination points will be in the towns of Goulds, Conception Bay South, Manuels, Chamberlains, Topsail, Paradise and Mount Pearl.
A curler will slide out of the hack carrying the Olympic torch at the day’s final resting point in St. John’s, the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, located on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. St. John’s is listed as the oldest English-founded city in North America.
Over the weekend, the flame will progress through Newfoundland and Labrador alongside the border of Quebec nearing the entrance of Nova Scotia.
